Thorne (1993) found a number of differences in the way boys and girls interact with their same-sex friends. Girls engage in more cooperative kinds of play, for example, jumping rope or practicing dance steps together. Girl also tends to say “Let’s …” or “Why don’t we…” to generate this play. Girls like to spend time with only one or two best friends. When there is conflict among friends, girls talk about the undesirable behavior of payments behind their backs rather than to their face. In contrast, boys engage in competitive rough-and-tumble play and physical fighting. Boys also like to appear tough by making verbal threats (for examples, ”I’m going to punch you”, boys tend more to hang around with a larger group of casual friends .Boys are more direct and confrontational, so their conflicts are often over quite quickly.
The differences about boys and girls
In China, teenage boys and girls have different social lives. First of all, girls prefer to go shopping or watch movies with friends in the free time. In contrast, boys like to play basketball or do some exercise. Secondly, parents have different social expectations of girls or boys. For example, they don’t encourage girls to go to the college after high school because they expect girls to just stay at home and do some housework. Unlike girls, they hope boys can get higher degree and have more ability to earn more money. In addition, girls are introverted and polite. They often say” thanks” and “excuse me” to other people. However, boys are extroverted. In conclusion, teenage boys and girls are treated in different ways.
The differences between Lynn and Isaias
There are many differences between my classmates Lynn and Isaias. First of all, Lynn likes middle school because she thinks that it didn’t have much homework. In contrast, Isaias feels he didn’t have a good time back then. Secondly, Lynn wants to study nursing after she enrolls to the college. Unlike Lynn, Isaias prefers to study general manager because he likes to be on top and leads other people. In addition, Lynn doesn’t want to keep studying after college because she wants to get a job and earn money. However, Isaias is undecided. If he has time to put it on his schedule, he will do it. In conclusion, Lynn and Isaias have many different opinions about education.

In the Disaster
All over the world, we are facing many natural disasters and accidental injury such as earthquakes, hurricanes and floods. How can we respond in the situation?
According to “panic”, the panic behavior is unhelpful and useless. The article presented many examples.First of all, many people died in the Chicago Fire. The theater did not burn down, but many people fell or jumped to the street. Panic caused many injuries. Secondly, 1,426 people were killed because of a stampede in 1990 in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. In addition, when people heard the planet Mars had invaded Earth, they cried, prayed, and tried to escape from death. However, it was an irrational response and could not help people. Panic made people lost self-control.
This reminds me of the movie 2012 by Roland Emmerich. It is a science fiction film set in December 21, 2012. The Mayans prediction comes true. People will face extinction. Governments join together to start the Noah’s Ark. They hope to escape this catastrophe. How can people save themselves? Accompanied by many volcanic eruptions, strong earthquakes and tsunamis, people panic. The Noah’s Ark cannot accept all of the people. Millions of people try to change their destiny. It makes people become fluster. Many people die in the escape. People always lose self-control when they feel afraid. However, is it good for them? We should have a positive attitude and calm down to find the correct way. A correct mentality usually helps us to make a good choice.
This also connects to a movie Aftershock. It was based on true history. In July 28, 1976, a Richter 7.8 earthquake occurred in Tangshan, China. 242,769 people were killed, and 164,000 people were injured. The number of deaths was the most serious in the 20th century. Traffic, communication, water and electricity interrupted. And it happened in the midnight while people were unprepared. In the 20th century, it was backward in technique in China. Horror filled in the city. People flight, people were scared. Panic is usually caused the tragedy.
In conclusion, we should be calm and clever when we face disasters. Panic behavior is unhelpful and useless.
Snow Falling on Cedars
Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson explored life of Japanese-Americans set in a small island near Seattle during WWII. Ishmael was falling love with Hatsue who was a Japanese- American girl in the children time. However, after the bombing at Pearl Harbor, their lives changed forever. Ishmael was drafted in to the war and forced to fight the Japanese, and he lost his arm. On the other hand, Hatsue was forced into the camp, and she got married to Kazuo. After WWII, they came bake to San Piedro to start their life again. However, Kazuo was suspected of Carl’s death because they had some argument related to a land deal. Furthermore, he was Japanese. Fortunately, Ishmael finally decided to tell everybody about the evidence he had to prove Kazuo is innocent, because of his conscience and love of Hatsue. In conclusion, Japanese-Americans suffered several injustices in the time around WWII.
The most interesting idea in the story is sometimes love can’t have a sequel because of war, but true love can always persist. It reminds me of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. The story is between a Chinese boy and a Japanese girl. Henry and Keiko met in Rainer Elementary school which was an all-white school. They accompanied each other in the kitchen and after school. Henry enjoyed school more after Keiko came. However, his father was a traditional Chinese and nationalist. He didn’t allow Henry to be friends with Japanese, especially in the war time. After that, Keiko was evacuated to Camp Harmony. Henry wanted to stay with Keiko, so he worked in a kitchen with Mrs.Beatty in Camp Harmony on Saturdays. After Keiko moved to another camp, he still came to visit her with Sheldon. He also went to the Panama Hotel to find the record which Keiko had given him. This is similar to Ishmael. Although Ishmael couldn’t stay with Hatsue anymore, he still wanted Hatsue to be happy. He would do anything for her. In conclusion, love is frustrating during war, but whatever the consequence is, true love can still exist and remain in their heart.
